Maintenance, Operation, Research, and Radiation Zones (MORRZ)-
A Design/Operation Tool for Intelligent Buildings with Application to the
Advanced Neutron Source (ANS)

Abstract

This paper describes a user-friendly application that assists in the design, operation, and maintenance of large facilities charged with complex activities and the "smart" building design that evolved from it. The maintenance, operation, research, and radiation zones (MORRZ) model centers around a specially designed, easily accessible data base containing essentially all relevant information about the facility. At the design stage, MORRZ generates, identifies, and displays all processes and activities planned for the life of the facility and stores them in the data base, enabling design team members to develop an effectively integrated smart facility design. After design and construction, the data base generated by the model will become a useful tool for maintenance and operation planning and control. It not only optimizes the design process but also provides the opportunity to break away from traditional designs and create new standards in the design industry. MORRZ is being developed and tested at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
